Though we are in a time of social distancing to stay safe, there are still ways we can help out those in need. One great example of a good cause that adapted to overcome quarantine difficulties is the American Heart Association’s Virtual Heart and Stroke Walk.
Going Virtual
Usually conducted in an enormous group along one path, this year’s Lincoln Heart Walk is handing the route-making reigns over to each walker, giving them independence to walk their own walk, ensuring safety and plenty of space between everyone.
Benefits from the Heart and Stroke Walk will help fight two of the top five leading causes of death in the country. Your donation helps scientists make the next lifesaving medical breakthrough, like the artificial heart valve.
Nelnet has long been a sponsor of the annual Heart Walk, and these new circumstances haven’t changed that one bit. Nelnet’s fundraising goal for this year is $10,000, and we’re well on our way to passing that number already.
Get Involved
If you want to get up to speed on the Heart Walk, you can either join or create a team under the Nelnet umbrella, or contribute to an individual walker. Each team and individual sets their own goal, and there are options for making contributions.
The event takes place on May 30, with no set start or end time. This year, you have the freedom to walk on your own time, at your own pace. There is no minimum or maximum distance you can walk, but be sure to know your limits. Walkers should consider the safety of themselves and others when out in public, given the current situation.
While Lincoln’s Heart Walk is going virtual, that may not be the case in your community. Some areas are postponing the event for the time being, instead. See what the plan is for your local Heart Walk on the American Heart Association’s website.
