Nelnet Recognized as a Top Workplace in Colorado

Creating an awesome work environment By Kyle Danielson June 1, 2020

Nelnet has been recognized by the Denver Post as one of Colorado’s top 150 places to work in 2020. Specifically, we’re among the top 36 businesses in the large-size category. These businesses were selected based on surveys conducted by employees of each company, so it’s an honor to be held in such high regard by our own associates.

A major reason why so many associates love working here is because Nelnet is dedicated to service, whether it’s serving customers, associates, or communities. It’s an essential part of what we do, and we stay committed to service by living out Nelnet’s core values every day. Here’s a reminder of those values and how we embrace each one.

Provide superior customer experiences.

This core value comes first because it’s the bedrock on which Nelnet was founded. We strive to help people achieve their dreams. In every interaction with our customers, we aim to make life easier for them.

Here’s what Stacy Luckey, a functional manager at Nelnet’s Diversified Servicing Center, said about her 16 years of helping people at Nelnet. ““I really just love the customer — that doesn’t just mean the person on the other end of the phone. Our customers are our clients, our leaders, our team members, and our peers,” Stacy said. “I love the fact that every day the customers I get to work with are completely different.”

Create an awesome work environment.

Going beyond wanting our customers to succeed, we also want to set up our associates for success. In Colorado, that means state-of-the-art facilities with beautiful mountain views, a casual dress code, and competitive benefits packages. Nelnet associates enjoy benefits like earned time off and free health premiums – and many of those perks start on day one. Plus, we try our best to enjoy each other’s company at work with frequent fun events like Diversity Month celebrations, and the occasional food contest.

Pursue opportunities for diversification and growth.

It’s important that we, as a company and as individuals, always look for ways to improve. As a business, we’ve diversified for the future with ventures in all-fiber network communications, renewable energy, and repayment assistance benefit programs. To help associates grow, we have various professional development and online learning courses on Nelnet University, so they can work toward achieving their career goals.

Communicate openly and honestly.

Internally and externally, a successful organization must be based on open and honest communication. We show our transparency to the public by answering any questions via phone, email, or social media, and we build transparency within by holding annual associate surveys for feedback and organizational improvement, and hosting monthly Spark events, where innovators across Nelnet share and discuss new trends, concepts, and developments.

Give back to the communities in which we live and work.

It can’t be stressed enough how important it is to give back. We want to see our communities, our neighbors, and our fellow humans thrive, and we work toward that goal by donating our time and money to causes that make a positive impact on society. Some ways we pay it forward are through the annual United Way fundraising drive, matching associate donations of over $100, and regularly putting together supply drives and days of service, like our Make-A-Wish event here in 2018.

These are the values that have attracted so many to work, grow, and build a future here at Nelnet. Sometime this fall, there will be an event awarding the top three businesses within each size division, and we look forward to seeing where Nelnet ends up among our fellow Colorado businesses.

Until then, if you’d like a career at one of the top workplaces in Colorado, check out our open positions and find one that’s right for you.
