Nelnet Introduces Dedicated Associate Experience Team

Pursuing opportunities for diversification and growth Creating an awesome work environment Giving back to the communities in which we live and work Communicating openly and honestly By Susie McCormick February 4, 2025

At Nelnet, supporting our associates has always been at the core of who we are. As part of our ongoing commitment to creating an exceptional workplace, we’re excited to introduce a new Associate Experience team, launching in 2025. This team will build on our strong foundation by sharpening our focus on enhancing every stage of the associate journey, ensuring that all associates feel valued, heard, and supported.

Why Nelnet Calls Its People “Associates”

At Nelnet, language matters. Employees are intentionally referred to as “associates.” Nelnet’s Chief Executive Officer Jeff Noordhoek explains this decision:

We call our people ‘associates’ because it reflects a partnership. It’s a reminder that each of us is integral to Nelnet’s success, and we’re in this together. Being an associate means you have a voice, a purpose, and a role in shaping our future.”

How the New Team Will Benefit Associates

This new team is about creating meaningful impact. By listening to our associates and focusing on the moments that matter most, we’re enhancing their experience in ways that foster engagement, connection, and growth. It’s an investment in our people and in Nelnet’s future.

What Is Associate Experience?

At Nelnet, associate experience is more than a buzzword—it’s about viewing the organization through the eyes of associates and enhancing all the touchpoints that define their journey. This includes everything from the recruitment process to the physical environments, to access to resources, to the relationships associates build with coworkers and managers.

By prioritizing associate experience, Nelnet’s focus is to create a work environment that fosters engagement, innovation, and collaboration. When associates feel supported and valued, they’re able to bring their best to work every day.

Focus Areas for Associate Experience

The Associate Experience team will work closely with Nelnet’s Enterprise Culture Council and all the organization’s business areas to help keep Nelnet’s Core Values front and center in all aspects of work. To achieve that, key areas of focus will include:

  • Communication—Enhancing clarity and transparency in our interactions.
  • Connections and Belonging—Building a sense of community and fostering strong relationships.
  • Development—Supporting associates’ growth through learning and career opportunities.
  • Giving Back—Embracing our commitment to the communities where we live and work.
  • Innovation—Encouraging creative thinking and continuous improvement in everything we do.
  • Onboarding—Welcoming new associates with the tools, knowledge, and support to succeed from day one.
  • Recognition and Motivation—Celebrating achievements and promoting a positive work environment.
  • Well-being—Prioritizing associates’ health, happiness, and overall well-being.

What’s Next?

As Nelnet continues this journey, the Associate Experience team will engage with associates across the organization to gather feedback, collaborate on ideas, and implement meaningful improvements. The new team is excited to partner with associates and leaders in building an even better experience for all.

The new Director – Associate Experience, Jessica Schumacher, shares some insights into what’s ahead:

Our focus is on building tools and initiatives that truly enhance the associate experience. Whether it’s expanding opportunities for associate recognition, launching social events to foster connections, or setting up Associate Listening Groups to gather feedback, we’re committed to programs that make a tangible difference. We’re here to listen, collaborate, and turn great ideas into action.
